Live Better Sober Newsletter: What Happens Just Before You Want a Drink?
August 14, 2026

One Small Question to Ask Yourself Tonight

Hello!

If you usually find yourself reaching for a drink at roughly the same time each evening, try noticing what happens just before the thought of drinking appears.

Don't try to change anything yet. Just ask yourself:

“What was I feeling, thinking, or doing immediately before I wanted that drink?”

Maybe you've just finished work. Maybe dinner is over. Maybe you're finally sitting down. Maybe you're bored, stressed, restless—or simply following a routine you've repeated hundreds of times.

Noticing that moment can help you begin to see the pattern behind the drink, rather than treating every evening as another test of willpower.

Try This Tonight

When you first think about having a drink, make a quick note of three things:

What time is it?
What just happened?
What do I expect the drink to do for me?

That's it. You don't have to solve anything tonight. You're simply gathering information about your own pattern.

If stopping alcohol could cause withdrawal symptoms—or if you are unsure whether it is safe to stop without medical support—please speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

Until next time,
