Why Day Three Can Pull You Back Into Drinking
Hello!
Day One often arrives with absolute certainty:
I never want to feel like this again.
By Day Two, you may still remember exactly why you wanted to stop. But by Day Three, something begins to change. You feel a little better. The discomfort has faded—and so has some of the urgency.
That is often when the familiar thought slips in:
“Maybe I can have just one tonight.”
This doesn’t mean that you lack willpower or that you weren’t sincere when you decided to
stop. It means your brain is no longer receiving the same immediate warning signals it received on Day One.
Prepare for the Thought Before It Arrives
Instead of waiting until Day Three to decide what you will do, write down your answer while the consequences are still fresh:
If I begin thinking “just one,” what do I want my Day One self to remind me?
Keep that answer somewhere easy to find. It could be beside your chair, on your phone, or near the place where you normally pour your first drink.
You are not trying to
frighten or shame yourself. You are simply leaving an honest message for the version of you who may temporarily forget why this mattered.
