Berry Mint Cooler Mocktail Recipe

This berry mint cooler combines strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries with fresh mint and sparkling water. Gently crushing some of the berries releases their juice, giving your drink a fruity flavor without needing a blender.

Make a pitcher for a barbecue, serve it with lunch, or enjoy a glass when you fancy something refreshing without alcohol.

Ingredients

Makes: 4 servings
Preparation time: About 10 minutes

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • ¼ cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • Up to 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup, optional
  • 4 cups chilled plain sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes

How to Make Your Berry Mint Cooler

  1. Prepare the fruit. Rinse the berries and drain well. Remove the strawberry tops and slice the strawberries.
  2. Release the berry juice. Put about half of each type of berry into a large pitcher. Gently crush them with a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon. Leave some texture—you don’t need to turn them into a purée.
  3. Add the mint. Add the mint leaves and press them gently a few times to release their aroma. Avoid grinding or shredding them.
  4. Sweeten if needed. If using honey, first loosen it with a little warm water so it mixes more easily into the cold drink. Add your honey or agave a little at a time; you can adjust the sweetness after adding the sparkling water.
  5. Add the bubbles. Add the remaining berries, then slowly pour in the chilled sparkling water. Stir gently and taste.
  6. Serve over ice. Divide the drink among four large glasses, spooning some fruit into each. Finish with a few fresh mint leaves.

Adjust It to Your Taste

Prefer a less sweet drink? Leave out the honey or agave and let the berries provide the sweetness.

Want a sharper finish? Add a small squeeze of lemon or lime juice.

Prefer fewer bits? Strain the crushed berry mixture before adding the sparkling water, then garnish with a few whole berries.

Using frozen berries? Thaw them first so they’re easy to crush. They’ll give you a softer fruit texture than fresh berries.

Making It Ahead

Prepare the berries ahead and keep them covered in the refrigerator. Add the mint, sparkling water, and ice shortly before serving for a fresher flavor and better fizz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use just one kind of berry?

Yes. Use three cups of whichever berries you enjoy, or a mixture of two varieties. Taste before adding sweetener because some berries are sweeter than others.

Do I need simple syrup?

No. This recipe works without added sweetener, or with a little honey or agave. If you already have plain simple syrup, you can use that instead and adjust it to taste.

Can I use still water?

Yes. The drink won’t be fizzy, but you can use chilled still water if you prefer.
