Written by Susan — Quit drinking at 37 • Sober since 1998 • Sharing what actually works
If you've ever promised yourself in the morning that tonight would be different, only to find yourself pouring another drink almost automatically, this workbook was created for you.
It introduces one of the most practical tools I used to interrupt my own nightly drinking habit: remembering, at exactly the right moment, why I never wanted to go back. Those personal reminders became what I call My Somatic Marker Moments.
✅ Quick Answer: What is the My Somatic Marker Moments workbook?
My Somatic Marker Moments is a free workbook that helps you identify and record the memories, experiences, and personal reasons that strengthen your resolve to stop drinking. Rather than relying on willpower alone, it gives you meaningful reminders you can return to whenever the evening habit starts calling.

My Somatic Marker Moments is a free workbook that helps you identify and record the memories, experiences, and personal reasons that strengthen your resolve to stop drinking. Rather than relying on willpower alone, it gives you meaningful reminders you can return to whenever the evening habit starts calling.
For years, I didn't realize that I was doing something that would eventually become one of the most important tools in my sobriety.
Whenever the urge to drink appeared, I would deliberately bring back one of my worst drinking memories. I wasn't simply remembering what had happened — I was reliving how it felt. The shame. The fear. The disappointment.
Most of all, I remembered waking up on January 17, 1998, so sick that I genuinely believed if I didn't stop drinking, I might not live to see my 40th birthday.
That memory instantly changed how I felt about taking another drink. Instead of seeing alcohol as relief, I saw where it could lead.
Many years later, I became curious about why this worked. After researching it, I discovered there was actually a name for what I had been doing all along: a somatic marker. Without realizing it, I had been using emotionally powerful memories to interrupt the automatic urge to drink.
That's why I created this workbook.
I wanted to give you a simple place to record your own Somatic Marker Moments — the experiences, memories, and realizations that remind you why you've chosen to stop drinking. When an urge appears, you don't have to rely on willpower alone.
Instead, you can open your workbook, reconnect with one of those moments, and remind yourself why your future matters more than another drink.
A Somatic Marker Moment is a memory that immediately reminds you why you chose to stop drinking.
It might be something you said or did after drinking too much. It might be an argument, an embarrassing conversation, a frightening experience, a terrible hangover, or simply waking up and thinking, "I can't keep living like this."
The important thing isn't what happened.
The important thing is how it made you feel.
Those feelings are powerful because your brain remembers them. When you deliberately revisit one of those moments as the urge to drink appears, you're reminding yourself where drinking really leads — not where the habit is trying to convince you it will lead.
That's why this workbook invites you to reflect on questions like:
These aren't questions designed to make you feel guilty or ashamed.
They're designed to help you preserve the moments that matter most, so that when your nightly habit tries to persuade you that "just one drink won't hurt," you already have a truthful answer waiting for you.
For me, those memories became one of my strongest defenses against the urge to drink. I never wanted to repeat those experiences again. Nearly thirty years later, I still haven't.

Don't feel as though you have to complete this workbook in one sitting.
In fact, I'd encourage you not to.
Start with the one memory that stands out above all the others — the moment that instantly reminds you why you never want to go back to drinking. Write it down while it's fresh in your mind.
Then simply keep the workbook.
Over the coming days, weeks, or even months, other memories may suddenly come back to you. That's exactly what happened to me. I would remember another drinking episode and think, "Oh yes... I'd forgotten about that one." That became another Somatic Marker Moment worth adding.
Your workbook isn't meant to be finished.
It's meant to grow.
Every meaningful memory you record becomes another reminder you can return to whenever the urge to drink tries to convince you that alcohol is a good idea. Over time, you'll build your own personal collection of reasons why your sober future is worth protecting.
For the last several years of my drinking, I had fallen into a routine without even realizing it.
I'd come home, kick off my shoes, get out of my work clothes, put on something comfortable... and before I knew it, I had a whiskey and Coke in my hand. I wasn't making a conscious decision every evening. My brain had learned the routine and simply ran it for me.
That's what brains do.
They're constantly looking for ways to make life easier. Instead of making hundreds of decisions every day, your brain creates habits and routines so it can run them on autopilot. It thinks it's helping you.
The problem is that your brain doesn't know the difference between a helpful routine and an unhealthy one. If you've repeated the same evening drinking pattern hundreds or even thousands of times, your brain simply assumes, "This is what we do when we get home."

That's why relying on willpower alone is so exhausting.
Every night you're trying to argue with a habit that's been rehearsed over and over again. Sometimes willpower wins. Often, the habit wins.
For me, the breakthrough came when I stopped trying to fight the habit head-on.
Instead, I interrupted it.
I kept a simple note on my refrigerator that read:
I don't drink. 🙂
Remember January 17!
That little reminder prompted me to reconnect with one of my strongest Somatic Marker Moments before the urge had a chance to take over. It wasn't about beating myself up. It was about remembering the truth. The urge weakened because I could clearly remember where drinking had led me before.
That's exactly what this workbook is designed to help you do.
It gives you a collection of personal reminders that interrupt the automatic habit loop and reconnect you with the reasons you've chosen a different future.
